Christmas Day

Mass During the Day - 25/12/2023

(Is 52:7-10; Ps 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6; Hebrews 1:1-6; John 1:1-18)

Fr Samuel Odeh

But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God…” (John 1:12)

Today we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.  This by itself alone is good news and all those who spread this gospel are beautiful and blessed.  We celebrate our faith that God himself took flesh among us with all the limitations and flaws of our nature as human beings in the person of Jesus Christ.

Our readings today all attempt to explain God’s plan of salvation for all human beings as the purpose for which Christ came, as well as his nature and his identity.  Our salvation through Christ began at the birth of the infant Jesus.  For instance, our gospel reading describes Jesus as the light that comes to dispel the darkness of the world, while our second reading from Hebrews declares that Jesus is the Son of God.

Do we believe that Jesus is the Son of God who came to save us? What are my plans for sharing in the mission of Christ to further God’s kingdom and bring his salvation to the ends of the earth?  Today we thank God for the beautiful gift he has given us in the celebration of Christmas.  May the birth of Christ bring us joy and happiness, and may all our Christmases be bright.

Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee”?  (Hebrews 1:5)
